How Arcweave brought interactive digital narratives to every student, regardless of background

Institution description

The Department of Cultural Technology and Communication at the University of the Aegean, based on the island of Lesvos, is one of Greece's most interdisciplinary programs. It brings together cultural heritage, digital media, programming, and audiovisual practice under a single roof. Its undergraduate curriculum is organized around three tracks, audiovisual production, museology and cultural applications, and informatics, while its postgraduate program continues that breadth with parallel specializations in museology and exhibition design, games and interactive applications, and cultural documentary.

Teaching context

Dr. Angeliki Chrysanthi uses Arcweave across three courses, the third-year Digital Interactive Narrative and fourth-year Game Theory and Design at the undergraduate level and the postgraduate Cultural Narratives: From Data to Scripting . Particularly in the latter course, the student synthesis ranges from cultural informatics students who are fluent in programming and game design to anthropologists, humanities scholars, and audiovisual creators with no prior programming experience. In every one of these courses, the objective is the same: to get students designing, prototyping, and reflecting on interactive narrative fast enough to learn the craft of telling stories, not to learn another tool.

Challenges

Before Arcweave, Dr. Chrysanthi rotated between Twine and other similar commercial tools depending on each individual’s focus and background, whether that was games or interactive documentary. Each tool solved part of the problem.

"The tools we used before were easy enough to start with, but two problems kept resurfacing. They did not handle audiovisual content well. And building anything complex required knowing programming or skills that our postgraduate students, coming from humanities and social science backgrounds, did not necessarily have. I ended up losing class time showing tutorials instead of teaching cultural narratives.”

Some commercial tools handled the audiovisual side, but they were designed around interactive documentaries, not games. The moment students tried to add branching mechanics or state, things got unwieldy.

On top of the tool fragmentation, there were three practical problems that kept recurring semester after semester:

  1. Lab installation friction. Students do not have admin rights on university lab machines. Every year, the department's IT support team asks faculty which software to install for the coming semester, which means every new tool requires a procurement and IT cycle before it can be used in class.
  2. Weak collaboration on group projects. Dr. Chrysanthi assigns group projects as the major assessed work in each course.. With previous tools, the technical burden tended to fall on one student in each team, while the others contributed mostly in theory and design.
  3. Teaching time lost to setup. A meaningful share of each semester was spent onboarding students to tools rather than on storytelling, game logic, research, or design feedback.

"What I needed was a tool I could use on the go, in the lab, without installation. Something humanities students could pick up in one session and informatics students could push hard. The two profiles never used to fit in one tool."

Why Arcweave worked across all three programs

Arcweave addressed each challenge directly, and the impact was visible from the first attempts.

One tool for both audiovisual and game logic. Students producing interactive documentaries, museum experiences, and games can all use the same workspace. Branching narrative, media, and variables live side by side, which means Dr. Chrysanthi no longer has to pick a different tool for each track.

A learning curve gentle enough for humanities students, deep enough for informatics students. In the postgraduate programme, students without any programming background still produced complete branching projects, and a subgroup with informatics backgrounds went further and used variables and conditional logic. No one came to office hours saying they were blocked by the platform.

"Even the students who are weak in programming pick it up, and they all tell me they loved the platform. The transition from zero experience to actually making something is one of the fastest I have observed."

Browser-based, no installation. Because Arcweave runs in the browser, it bypasses the lab IT cycle entirely. Students log in from any workstation, including their own laptops, and pick up exactly where they left off.

"The fact that it is online, that it does not need to be installed, saved me hours from sorting out the logistics."

Real-time collaboration that actually distributes the work. With every student on their own account inside a shared workspace, group projects finally functioned as group projects. Teammates could talk, build, and iterate in the same environment at the same time, with no one acting as the sole technical bottleneck.

AI generation inside the environment. Generative AI is not banned in Dr. Chrysanthi's courses, but it is integrated into the methodology with transparency requirements according to the departmental and institutional guidelines. Having AI image generation inside Arcweave makes its use legible to both instructor and student, which keeps the academic ethics work simpler. The recently added image-as-template feature, which lets students seed generation with a reference image for character consistency, has been especially relevant for the visual-novel-style prototypes her students gravitate toward.

A clear bridge to Unity for thesis work. This is the feature that sealed the department's decision to standardize on Arcweave. Many of Dr. Chrysanthi's students continue into thesis projects built in Unity, and Arcweave's plugin plus the recent step-by-step Unity workflow tutorial give them an obvious path from prototype to production engine.

"That convinced the master's program director, and my colleagues, that Arcweave is the right tool to keep. For games especially, the workflow is far better, and there is a real connection to the second-semester assignments and the second year thesis which are developed in Unity."

What the students built

In the most recent postgraduate semester, Dr. Chrysanthi's students used Arcweave to prototype interactive narratives spanning short story games, museum-style scenarios, and serious-game experiments. One of the standout student games, Mariola, demonstrates how engaging even a simple branching narrative can become when production friction is removed. Students who incorporated video assets used Arcweave alongside their existing video workflows, while informatics-leaning teams pushed into variables and conditional logic to add light game mechanics on top of the narrative.
At the same time, an in-course game jam produced three team projects, giving students a fast feedback loop on the platform under time pressure.
The undergraduate Game Design course students will follow with more advanced projects, with stronger demonstration of Arcweave's game logic capabilities, given that those students already have a programming background to bring in.

 

The bigger payoff: time returned to teaching

The single most important shift, according to Dr. Chrysanthi, is not a feature. It is what is gained from her weekly teaching workload.

"Arcweave saved me from the technical issues — and from the time I used to spend just getting students to collaborate. That time went back into teaching. We could discuss the game logic, push the research further, develop the narrative. We had time to focus on the argumentation and the design of the story itself."
