How BlueGooGames crafts agile narratives for Space Chef thanks to Arcweave

Studio Background

BlueGooGames is an independent studio founded by childhood friends Niclas and Tobias. The duo, driven by a shared passion for crafting quirky and imaginative experiences, set out to create Space Chef—a game that combines humor, adventure, and cooking across the cosmos. Their teamwork thrives on clarity, communication, and tools that make complex storylines easier to manage without technical bottlenecks.

Game Overview

Space Chef invites players to hunt, cook, and deliver cosmic cuisine using ingredients from across the galaxy to become the greatest chef in the Horseshoe Nebula. Explore alien worlds teeming with (edible) life, win the hearts of your customers, and thwart the rise of an evil interstellar burger chain.

Players run their own restaurant, complete deliveries across planets, and navigate storylines filled with humor, eccentric customers, and interstellar hijinks—all while fighting to outcook an evil burger empire.

With its blend of exploration, management, and branching dialogue, Space Chef demanded a clear, flexible, and visual workflow for narrative development.

The Challenge

With only two people handling scripting, gameplay, and narrative design, BlueGooGames needed a solution that would help them stay organized across writing, testing, and implementation.
Traditional text documents and linear writing tools quickly became unsustainable as their branching dialogue trees grew. The team also needed something that allowed non-programmers to participate fully in the narrative design process.

“We tried a few tools,” Tobias explained. “Most of them felt overwhelming and overcomplicated. We wanted something intuitive that wouldn’t stop the flow of writing. The fact that Arcweave was browser-based was probably the deciding factor.”

The Arcweave Solution

Arcweave introduced an immediate sense of clarity to Space Chef’s narrative workflow. The team used it to visually build and test branching storylines, prototype dialogue systems, and collaborate in real time without installations or setup hurdles.

Some of the most impactful features for BlueGooGames included:

  • Browser-based collaboration: working simultaneously from different locations, seeing live updates from each other.
  • Play mode testing: quickly running through dialogue branches to catch errors before integration.
  • Integration with Pixelcrushers Dialogue System in Unity: directly calling scripts and modifying variables from Arcweave nodes.
  • Visual logic building: using IF statements, jumpers, and variable conditions to streamline dialogue flow.

They started by sketching rough parameters and narrative outlines in Google Docs, then moved into Arcweave to build interactions. For simple dialogue trees, all text, logic, and conditions were created directly within Arcweave.

“We have each NPC as a separate board, so we can get a quick overview of the dialogue.”

This structure helped them manage their expanding cast of characters and story branches with clarity and focus, especially when testing interconnected dialogue sequences in Play Mode.

Team Collaboration and Accessibility

For Tobias - who isn’t a programmer- Arcweave’s intuitive interface changed everything.
“I didn’t need programming skills to use it. Niclas handled the logic parts, but I could still understand and contribute fully. With two accounts, we’d see our cursors move live while building together. It felt natural.”

The visual layout and shared boards eliminated confusion and version control issues. The team no longer needed to track versions across multiple documents or messages. Instead, Arcweave kept development centralized and transparent.

Results and Impact

By integrating Arcweave early in production, the BlueGooGames team:

  • Reduced development friction between narrative and technical tasks
  • Simplified collaboration across roles despite being a small remote studio
  • Accelerated implementation of dialogue content in Unity
  • Empowered non-programmers to contribute directly to branching logic

The strength of Arcweave’s visual and collaborative design let the duo focus on storytelling and gameplay, rather than workflow management.

Why Arcweave?

“Browser-based. No installation. Intuitive. Easy to use even if you’re not a programmer,” they shared. “It’s really for everyone.”

Beyond functionality, Arcweave’s supportive team and quick feedback loop stood out. “The support has been great. The team actually listens to input and keeps improving. It’s been a smooth and empowering experience.”

Final Thoughts

For small studios like BlueGooGames, where time and focus are precious, Arcweave became not just a writing tool, but a production companion.
By simplifying branching development and making logic accessible to all, Arcweave let Space Chef grow from concept to an engaging, narrative-driven adventure—one carefully cooked, served, and plated in the cloud.
